WHEN Luke Beveridge was handed a book at the start of the year, he couldn’t have envisioned its central message would go on to inspire his team to a record-breaking premiership.
But that’s exactly what happened when general manger of footy Graham Lowe entered his office with a story called “Salty Dogs”.
It was a children’s book. It was simple. But it also had a very powerful message.
“I’m reading though this book and there’s actual canines, it’s actually got a nautical feel, but it’s about confronting your fears,” Beveridge told Fox Footy’s On The Couch.
“This year has really been about facing our fears and getting out of our comfort zone.”

After making inquiries with an advertising firm, The Western Bulldogs were granted permission to print 100 copies with their logo imprinted on each book.

At a preseason training camp in Lorne, every player was handed one to read. The themes in the book became the Western Bulldogs own tenets, ones which became invaluable as the season unfolded.

“We started our leadership talks, we gave each player a book about the content and to our players’ credit they confronted their fears all year,” Beveridge said.

“Every time there was a trial or tribulation, they met it head on and in the end, part of going into the grand final was bringing it back into what they had done.”

At three-quarter time last Saturday, Beveridge reinforced this very same message. Half an hour later, the underdogs defied their critics, just as they had all season, to take home the ultimate prize.

And Beveridge believes “Salty Dogs” certainly played a role in manufacturing the belief required to win a premiership.

“The last page says, ‘run towards the fire’,” he said.

“They’re basically in the fire now. They’ve met all the challenges head on. The grand final was as hot as it was going to get and they were ready for it.”
